Tom Denberg, MD, is the Senior Medical Director of Pinnacol Assurance, Colorado’s largest worker’s compensation carrier. He is a physician executive with expertise in population health, complex care management, and alternative payment models. He was born and grew up in Boulder, Colorado. Prior to his role at Pinnacol, Dr. Denberg was chief strategy officer and executive vice president of the Carilion Clinic in Virginia, a multi-hospital health system with 650 employed physicians. In this role, Dr. Denberg was responsible for payer contracting, IT and analytics, the Medicare Shared Savings Program, and the system-owned Medicare Advantage and Medicaid managed care plans. Dr. Denberg also served as chief quality officer for Atrius Health in Boston, the largest multispecialty physician group practice in Massachusetts. In this role, he established a new quality and patient safety department. Dr. Denberg was originally a member of the faculty of the College of Medicine at the University of Colorado where he carried out health services research, served in a variety of medical director roles, and established the Center for Health Promotion. Dr. Denberg is an active, board certified internist, completing his residency at The University of Chicago and a fellowship in health services research at the University of California-San Francisco. He earned his MD, with honors, at the University of Illinois. Dr. Denberg has published more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and previously chaired the clinical guidelines committee of the American College of Physicians.
